Ian Fernandez is a graduate student in the Microbiology and Cell Science program at the
University of Florida. After completing his master’s program, Ian intends to gain industry
experience in the biotechnology sector, while continuing his research involvement in the fields of
astrobiology, microbiology, and geoscience. Ian is currently interested in studying extremophilic
microorganisms that thrive in relatively harsh ecological niches. He aims to expand on our
understanding of the origin and habitability of life in the universe, as well as to explore the limits of life’s adaptability in extreme environments. As an aspiring astrobiologist, Ian yearns to be at
the forefront of space exploration and hopes to one day contribute to the discovery of
extraterrestrial life. Outside of academia, Ian enjoys listening to music, going to the beach, and
being in nature.
